MPN Research Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Partner to Spur Innovation in Fibrosis Research

January 24, 2012 By: Admin Category: Health Problems

MPN Research Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Partner to Spur Innovation in Fibrosis Research

Chicago and White Plains, New York (PRWEB) January 23, 2012

Applicants for this concept grant program (titled the MF Challenge) will have until April 1, 2012 to submit their proposal for funding in the amount of up to $ 100,000 per grant. The grant review will take place in June 2012 in Chicago.

“Concept grants” are used to identify innovative and novel approaches to an issue. Since the objective is to identify and fund new approaches to this problem, applicants are not required to have preliminary data. Success for a grant is defined as proving an idea is worth pursuing further.

Fibrosis is the formation of excessive fibrous connective tissue in place of healthy tissue. The disease myelofibrosis (one of the myeloproliferative neoplasms) is characterized by fibrosis in the bone marrow. Prognosis for sufferers of myelofibrosis varies. A small proportion of MF patients can transform to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer that progresses rapidly.

MPN Research Foundation President Barbara Van Husen feels that this grant program is timely: “Myelofibrosis is the deadliest of the MPNs, and patients of both polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia have the potential to convert to myelofibrosis. Despite that, we have never received a request for funding based purely on research into fibrosis. We are going to change that with this grant program.”

“LLS takes an aggressive and proactive approach to identifying areas of critical unmet need and funding research in those areas in order to improve the outcomes for patients with particularly urgent diagnoses and myelofibrosis is such an area,” said Richard C. Winneker, LLS senior vice president, research. “LLS looks forward to working with the MPN Research Foundation to meet the challenge for patients with myelofibrosis.”

About The Myeloproliferative Research Foundation

The MPN Research Foundation was started in 2000. Founded by patients, for patients, terms on every research grant are negotiated to maximize the dollars invested in actual research. The Foundation’s esteemed Scientific Advisory Board utilizes a rigorous selection process to ensure donations are allocated to the most innovative research projects. To date, the Foundation has awarded over eight million dollars for MPN research. While the priority remains on funding innovative and accountable MPN research, the mission also includes educating and empowering the MPN community.

Chock Full O’nuts Teams Up With The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation To Fight Parkinson’s

Portsmouth, VA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 22, 2011

Chock full o’Nuts, “The Heavenly Coffee™,” and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) today kicked off a campaign designed to generate awareness about Parkinson’s disease and the need to fund research for new treatments and a cure.

Dennis Crawford, senior marketing manager for Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA and the Chock full o’Nuts brand, and Robin Elliott, Executive Director of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, announced a multi-faceted promotional effort that would continue throughout the year.

“Parkinson’s is a disease that affects nearly one million Americans,” Crawford said. “Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA and the Chock full o’Nuts brand are pleased to partner with the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in this campaign that will encourage people to join the fight against Parkinson’s by raising awareness of this debilitating disease and supporting PDF’s research programs.”

According to Crawford, Chock full o’Nuts cafes and coffee shops from New York City to Sicily’s Sigonella Air Force Base will feature in-store promotional counter signage and specially identified cups tied to the PDF cause. Retail consumers and online orders will soon see one million specially marked cans of Chock with messaging from the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. A full-page coupon insert will appear March 27th in 35 million Sunday newspapers across the country. Finally, to drive online traffic to the PDF website, a special link from chockfullonuts.com will connect visitors to PDF information and encourage clicks for donations.

New York’s famous Chock full o’Nuts coffee brand has a longtime association with the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. William Black, the originator of Chock full o’Nuts coffee, began the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in 1957 when he learned that his lifelong friend and business associate had developed the disease. Today, William Black’s wife and well-known singer of the Chock heavenly coffee jingle, Page Morton Black, serves as PDF’s board chairman.

Robin Elliott said of the partnership, “The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation has been committed to finding the cause(s) of and a cure for Parkinson’s disease for over 54 years. We are certain that Mr. Black would be happy to know that the two organizations he founded are now partnering to push forward progress toward these goals and we thank Chock full o’Nuts for its support.”

About the Brand—Chock full o’Nuts. William Black opened his first nut shop on Broadway and 43rd Street in 1926, and six years later, his first coffee shop in 1932. The Great Depression caused Black to convert his chain of 18 nut shops into coffee shops which sold a good cup of coffee and a sandwich for a nickel. In 1953, Black began selling his own brand of coffee – named after his small coffee shops — in local supermarkets; his “Chock full o’Nuts” brand coffee was an immediate success with New York grocery shoppers. The company’s radio and TV jingle, “Chock full o’Nuts is that heavenly coffee, better coffee a millionaire’s money can’t buy” are known, loved (and hummed) by heart by generations of New Yorkers. Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles to Deliver Updated Epilepsy Research Findings at Fourth Annual Brain Storm Summit

June 26, 2011 By: Admin Category: Health Problems

Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles to Deliver Updated Epilepsy Research Findings at Fourth Annual Brain Storm Summit

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 25, 2006

The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles announced today that it will host its fourth annual Brain Storm Summit on November 4, 2006 at the Cathedral Plaza Conference Center in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to offering presentations on updated research findings and new topics in epilepsy, this year’s summit will kick off the Foundation’s 50th year of serving people with epilepsy in the greater Los Angeles region.

“Despite some advances in epilepsy research, individuals with epilepsy and their loved ones still face an often devastating diagnosis and many challenges,” said Susan Pietsch-Escueta, the executive director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. “What better way to launch our 50th anniversary than to ensure that individuals with epilepsy and their loved ones have the information and the ability to improve their quality of life and advocate on their own behalf.”

Despite its prevalence, epilepsy remains one of the least understood neurological diseases. Thirty to forty percent of people with epilepsy continue to have seizures despite treatment. In a recent nationwide survey of people with epilepsy, 54% of the respondents who were still in school reported that epilepsy had a negative impact on their academic performance, citing difficulties with memory, thinking, concentration, language, problem-solving and more. Furthermore, pregnant women with epilepsy face a double-edged sword as both seizures and the drugs taken to prevent them may negatively affect their developing child. The association between epilepsy and depression is also especially strong – more than one of every three persons with epilepsy is also affected by this mood disorder.

The Brain Storm Summit is designed to address these issues and others by bringing those with epilepsy and their loved ones together with nationally-recognized, English- and Spanish-speaking doctors and presenters. This year, Dr. William Theodore from the Epilepsy Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke will present an overview of the latest epilepsy research findings. In addition, specialists in epilepsy and other experts will share the latest research and therapies, and answer questions to address the more common challenges.

This year’s Brain Storm Summit will also launch the Foundation’s 50th anniversary of service in this region. Initially established as the Los Angeles County Epilepsy Society (LACES) in 1957, the Foundation gradually expanded to include the counties of Orange, San Bernardino and Ventura in its services, and has since changed its name to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. To commemorate the event, the Epilepsy Foundation will host a special luncheon to recognize its “Partners for Real Progress”: regional medical epilepsy programs, key volunteers; nationwide Epilepsy Foundations, National Institutes of Health, the International Bureau of Epilepsy and the International League against Epilepsy.

Advanced registration by October 31st, 2006 is strongly recommended. Prior to October 31st, the seminar fee is $ 20 for individuals and $ 30 for a family of two. Additional family members are $ 10. The fees increase to $ 25, $ 35 and $ 15 respectively after October 31st. The fee will help to cover refreshments, syllabus materials and parking. For detailed information and to register, visit http://www.epilepsy-socalif.org or call (800) 564-0445.

About Epilepsy

When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they have epilepsy. There are over 20 types of seizures and 40 epilepsy syndromes affecting approximately 2.7 million people in the U.S. and 50 million people worldwide. This year, another 200,000 people in our country will be diagnosed; an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 will die of seizures and related causes. To date, there is no known cure.

About the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles

Established in 1957, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is the only non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated solely to serving the estimated 150,000 to 180,000 people living with epilepsy in this region. Our mission is to improve the lives of people affected by epilepsy by promoting care, prevention, research and cure through education, support services, programs, advocacy and awareness. The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is affiliated with the Epilepsy Foundation of America in Landover, Maryland.

Bamboo Flavone May Provide Effective Relief for Prostatitis Inflammation — Prostatitis Foundation

Smithshire, IL (PRWEB) December 28, 2005

The Prostatitis Foundation said today that bamboo flavone may be effective in relieving symptoms of inflammation due to prostatitis as well as prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer, based on a recently-approved patent submitted by the company Future Solutions Development (FSD).

Citing recent reports, the Prostatitis Foundation said that FSD’s patent entitled “Bamboo Flavone Application in Anti-Prostate Disease Drug” was recently approved by China’s State Intellectual Property Bureau as well as by the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the international patent registration and administration organization.

The treaty makes it possible to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in each of a large number of countries by filing an international patent application. “The approval is the first step for FSD to enter into the markets in U.S. and Japan,” according to the online Science Letter information service.

“The bamboo flavone, as a natural extract ingredient, poses no long-term side effects to the human body,” said Science Letter editors.

Hospice By The Bay and Foundation Merge Under One Governing Board

Larkspur, CA (Vocus) February 12, 2009

As of January 1st, Hospice By The Bay , a Bay Area regional provider of hospice and palliative care, and its Foundation have become one entity, under the guidance of one Board of Directors. The new entity will be named Hospice By The Bay. The move “creates a single corporate governance structure, fully aligned toward common goals, to ensure that Hospice By The Bay operates efficiently, both strategically and organizationally,” said Hospice By The Bay’s Chief Executive Officer Sandra Lew, LCSW, and Board of Directors Chair Dennis Gilardi in a memo to Hospice staff. The merger, Lew adds, offers an opportunity to unite care, services, and corporate administration with the fundraising arm of the organization.

The recommendation for reorganization was the result of Hospice By The Bay’s work in 2007 with the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team, founded by Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, which provides pro bono consulting services to nonprofits in the arts, education, the environment, and social services. Previously, Hospice By The Bay and Hospice By The Bay Foundation were two entities, each with its own governing board, and under the parent organization, Hospice By The Bay Partners. Lew, President of the Foundation and CEO of Hospice, will retain the title of CEO.

Hospice By The Bay’s 14-member Governing Board includes officers: Dennis A. Gilardi, Chair; Richard S Riede, Esq., Vice Chair; Robert P. Kowal, Treasurer; Linda Simpson, Secretary; Stephen A. Thal, Chair Emeritus; and Board members: Katherine M. Beacock; Michael R. Dailey; Col. Robert V. Kane; Jeffrey D. Kirshbaum; Kenneth Meislin; William C. Mentzer, Jr., MD; Gerald R. Peters, Esq.; Mary L. Taverna, Hospice By The Bay President Emeritus; and Sandra Lew, Hospice By The Bay CEO.

In addition to the Board, there are two advisory councils that include a Board Development Council to oversee and participate in fundraising and community relations, and a Board Operations Council to oversee and participate in the delivery of hospice, palliative care and other clinical programs.

Hospice By The Bay , which serves Marin, San Francisco, Northern San Mateo, and Sonoma counties, is dedicated to providing the highest quality of end-of-life care to patients and their families regardless of their ability to pay. Hospice By The Bay also serves people whose lives have been affected by the loss of a loved one through its community grief support program.

Hospice By The Bay is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been serving the Bay Area since 1975. Hospice By The Bay programs are funded through health care reimbursement and financial and in-kind donations from community members and businesses. Geisinger Partners with Orion Health to Build Mission-Critical Foundation for Data Integration

Geisinger Partners with Orion Health to Build Mission-Critical Foundation for Data Integration

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) May 23, 2011

Geisinger Health System, a physician-led health care system dedicated to health care, education, research and service spanning 42 counties and serving 2.6 million people, has selected the Orion Health Rhapsody Integration Engine as the health system’s new platform for migrating, managing, and streamlining message exchange between over 200 clinical and business systems. The new integration engine will enable them to better participate in Pennsylvania’s Keystone Health Information Exchange.

Gregory Miller, technical analyst at Geisinger explains, “We needed a reliable and flexible data integration platform that supports newer technology capabilities and connectivity to our RHIO — Rhapsody is a key component in our participation — and participation in health information exchanges. Rhapsody will also support our goals to automate and connect to federal programs such as NHIN and PHIN.”

Geisinger Health System’s previous integration engine was sunsetting so they used the opportunity to review their criteria list and explore other product options. Rhapsody was selected for its ability to provide a broad set of monitoring capabilities, for its easy to use drag and drop functionality and its ability to run anywhere, including UNIX. In addition, Rhapsody provides a migration tool set to enable a seamless, step by step process away from eGate, significantly reducing migration time.

Orion Health Senior Vice President of Global Marketing Christopher Ward says, organizations faced with a sunset situation as with eGate have the opportunity to deploy a platform for the future. “Orion Health’s focus on health care customers results in products that are remarkably straight forward and adapted to future requirements. Rhapsody’s eGate migration tool kit means an IT department can reduce the time it spends replacing technology and implement a platform to get on to the current and future business of meeting health data exchange needs.”

“Geisinger Health System is a leader in developing systems that help patients and physicians use technology to connect for better health outcomes. Orion Health is delighted to enjoy association with innovative, mission-forward organizations like Geisinger.”

Orion Health solutions use standards-based technology to integrate data within a facility and external partners without incurring costly rip and replace approaches. Currently the company helps facilities and healthcare communities that connect 35 million patients with tens of thousands of active users.

Renowned Vascular Surgeon Frank J. Veith Named First Jacobson Awardee by Vascular Disease Foundation

New York (PRWEB) November 19, 2004

Renowned vascular surgeon Frank J. Veith, MD, The William J. von Liebig Chair in Vascular Surgery, Montefiore Medical Center (Bronx, NY), and Professor of Surgery, The Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx, NY) is the recipient of the first Julius H. Jacobson II, M.D. Award for Physician Excellence, given by the Vascular Disease Foundation.

The award is named for Julius H. Jacobson, II, M.D., considered the preeminent pioneer in microsurgery. In early 2004, Dr. Jacobson seeded the award via a gift to the Vascular Disease Foundation.

Dr. Peter Gloviczki, president of the Vascular Disease Foundation, presented the award to Dr. Veith at the 31st VEITHsymposium™ at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers (New York). Dr. Jacobson attended the presentation.

“Frank Veith’s uniquely important contribution has been bringing about a globalization of vascular surgical knowledge to the profession,” said Dr. Jacobson.

Candidates for the non-monetary award were screened by a committee of peers independent of

Dr. Jacobson, who was informed of the awardee after the fact.

Criteria for nomination were:

-Must be a licensed physician in good standing who has made significant contributions that have advanced the science of clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of vascular disease or who has made exceptional contributions to vascular education programs, to either health professionals or patients.

-Must be a person of recognized personal and professional integrity.

-Must not be a member of the Board of Directors of the Vascular Disease Foundation.

Dr. Veith, “I am gratified that the Vascular Disease Foundation has bestowed its Award for Physician Excellence on me. The Foundation is doing important work by increasing awareness of the profession and sharing medical knowledge globally. This will lead to improvements in physician’s practice and patient care.”

About Julius Jacobson: Julius H. Jacobson II M.D. is considered the preeminent pioneer in microsurgery. After earning a master’s degree in cell physiology at the University of Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and served his residency in general and thoracic surgery at New York’s Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. He then became director of surgical research at the University of Vermont where his earlier experience with microscopes led him to become the first surgeon to bring a microscope into the operating room for the entire range of surgery beyond the eye and ear. Dr. Jacobson’s work led to such advances as coronary artery surgery and limb re-implantation. It is estimated that today, one-half of all neurosurgical operations utilize microsurgical techniques. Dr. Jacobson also developed the first microscope that allowed the surgeon and first assistant to view the operative field simultaneously.

This “dipliscope” is now in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Jacobson and his wife, Joan, live in New York City.

Anthem College Online signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Arizona Veterans’ Education Foundation pledging to support the Arizona Veterans Supportive Campus Initiative. The Initiative calls for colleges to adopt best practices to support veterans returning to school, and their families.

The Initiative came from a grant from the Arizona Veterans Donation Fund as administered by the Arizona Department of Veterans Services to the Arizona Veterans’ Education Foundation to assess the higher education needs of returning veterans. Veterans were experiencing retention and graduation rates as low as three percent. The Foundation’s report recommended that Arizona colleges could raise these rates by adopting the Supportive Education for Returning Veterans (SERV) and Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) models currently offered by the University of Arizona.

Using Best Practices from each model and veteran support service recommendations from the American Council on Education, the Veterans Supportive Campus Initiative was created to encourage ground campuses and online colleges to take proactive measures that support student veterans and their families. Campuses that agreed to participate in a pilot project to create a state model would be recognized as an Arizona Veterans Supportive Campus.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the parties to participate in a pilot program was signed January 20, 2011, at the Anthem College Online offices. “We want to do a better job with veterans and active-duty military personnel,” said Anthem Education Group President Bill Hillard at the signing. “We are fully committed to this effort.” The Anthem pilot project, which begins by the end of this month, will include the following activities:

Incorporate veteran services modeled on the SERV and VETS program, and that follows the ACE definition of a Veteran Supportive Campus. Examples are orientations for veterans only and providing opportunities for veterans to speak about their experiences with classmates.
Identify a student veteran and a faculty or college staff member to actively participate in an Initiative Task Force.
Recommend improvements for the Anthem College Online Veterans program. These improvements could include awarding academic credits for military training or demonstrating the economic benefits of the program.
Provide a one-stop resource center for students who are on active duty or who are veterans, and their families and foster develop of a military/veteran presence within the college.
Establish a branch of Student Veterans of America.

Anthem College Online is a member of the Anthem Education Group family of schools and offers accredited degrees in courses such as online accounting programs, business management courses, criminal justice programs online, and paralegal programs.
