MPN Research Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Partner to Spur Innovation in Fibrosis Research

MPN Research Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Partner to Spur Innovation in Fibrosis Research

Chicago and White Plains, New York (PRWEB) January 23, 2012

Applicants for this concept grant program (titled the MF Challenge) will have until April 1, 2012 to submit their proposal for funding in the amount of up to $ 100,000 per grant. The grant review will take place in June 2012 in Chicago.

“Concept grants” are used to identify innovative and novel approaches to an issue. Since the objective is to identify and fund new approaches to this problem, applicants are not required to have preliminary data. Success for a grant is defined as proving an idea is worth pursuing further.

Fibrosis is the formation of excessive fibrous connective tissue in place of healthy tissue. The disease myelofibrosis (one of the myeloproliferative neoplasms) is characterized by fibrosis in the bone marrow. Prognosis for sufferers of myelofibrosis varies. A small proportion of MF patients can transform to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer that progresses rapidly.

MPN Research Foundation President Barbara Van Husen feels that this grant program is timely: “Myelofibrosis is the deadliest of the MPNs, and patients of both polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia have the potential to convert to myelofibrosis. Despite that, we have never received a request for funding based purely on research into fibrosis. We are going to change that with this grant program.”

“LLS takes an aggressive and proactive approach to identifying areas of critical unmet need and funding research in those areas in order to improve the outcomes for patients with particularly urgent diagnoses and myelofibrosis is such an area,” said Richard C. Winneker, LLS senior vice president, research. “LLS looks forward to working with the MPN Research Foundation to meet the challenge for patients with myelofibrosis.”

About The Myeloproliferative Research Foundation

The MPN Research Foundation was started in 2000. Founded by patients, for patients, terms on every research grant are negotiated to maximize the dollars invested in actual research. The Foundation’s esteemed Scientific Advisory Board utilizes a rigorous selection process to ensure donations are allocated to the most innovative research projects. To date, the Foundation has awarded over eight million dollars for MPN research. While the priority remains on funding innovative and accountable MPN research, the mission also includes educating and empowering the MPN community.

Southern Pines, NC (PRWEB) December 13, 2011

Travel Resorts of America hosted their annual Haunted Forest at their Sycamore Resort Lodge in Jackson Springs, NC this October to raise funds to donate to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Gettysburg Battlefield Resort in PA, part of the Travel Resorts of America family, also hosted a haunted house and hayride to aid in the fundraising. The events drew hundreds of locals and tourists to the resorts to experience haunted buildings and fun over two weekends in October. Total proceeds from both events totaled over $ 14,000 and were donated exclusively to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Representatives from Trident Marketing presented the check to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Charlotte office on December 8, 2011. “Donations are extremely important to our mission,” said Kimberly Pate, Deputy Executive Director of the Charlotte, NC chapter. “Like everyone else, we have felt the effects of the tough economy, but that doesn’t change our mission. We still have patients and families to help, research to fund, and campaigns to support. We are very appreciative of all donations –big and small.”

Trident Marketing has made donations to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in previous years, and is proud to contribute once again.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Aside from donations, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society raises funds annually with five campaigns: Team in Training, Light the Night Walk, School & Youth Programs, Man & Woman of the Year, and Leukemia Cup Regatta. More information about their campaigns and mission can be found at http://www.lls.org.

National Non-Profit, EyeCare America, and the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons Host Finish Line Celebration for “EyeRide for Sight” Cyclists

Baltimore (Vocus) July 9, 2008

EyeCare America, a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons are partnering together to welcome the EyeRide for Sight team to Annapolis as they conclude their transcontinental bike ride. The ride was intended to educate the public about eye disease, encourage the public to utilize EyeCare America’s free eye care programs and raise funds to support the organization’s efforts to save sight. Funds raised by the ride will allow EyeCare America to provide free medical and surgical eye care to someone in need within the U.S.

“The Maryland Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons is proud to support the EyeRide for Sight and help raise awareness about eye disease in Maryland and across the country,” said Nancy J. Nickles-Dawson, Executive Director of the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons.

The four cyclists began their journey at EyeCare America’s headquarters in San Francisco on May 7, 2008. Over the course of two months, the team raised more than a half a million dollars. For every $ 25 raised, EyeCare America is able to provide free medical eye care to someone in need within the U.S. To make a donation to EyeRide for Sight, log on to http://www.eyecareamerica.org and click on the “EyeRide for Sight” logo.

“EyeCare America is one of the largest public service programs in the U.S. to offer access to medical and surgical eye care at no cost,” said Richard P. Mills, MD, ophthalmologist and Chair of EyeCare America. “Through the EyeRide for Sight, we hope to get the message out to medically underserved communities that EyeCare America can help save their sight.”

In fact, over 90% of the care provided through the program has no cost to the patients. In addition, EyeCare America provides tens of thousands of people each year with free eye health educational materials. Since 1985, EyeCare America has provided over 1 million people with sight-saving services and resources.

In Maryland alone, EyeCare America has helped approximately 9,000 people. The state is also home to approximately 200 volunteer ophthalmologists who provide medical eye care at no cost to the patient.

The EyeRide for Sight cycling team, led by Tom McClellan of Gloucestershire, South West England, is made up of four cyclists including McClellan, Alex Galvin, Ben Leigh, and Fred Mahon and two support team members Ben Hodge and Oliver Lombard. The team traveled 3,000 mile across the United States over the course of two months to raise awareness about eye disease and EyeCare America’s services.

“We are excited to work with EyeCare America in order to help raise awareness about eye disease and preventable blindness,” said Tom McClellan, lead cyclist for EyeRide for Sight. “We hope that our bike ride across the United States encourages others to give the gift of sight by telling a friend or loved one about the program or making a donation to save the sight of someone in need.”

For more than 20 years, EyeCare America has provided free eye health educational materials and access to medical eye care at no out-of-pocket cost, for those who qualify. For information and to determine eligibility, the public can call 800-222-EYES (3937) tool-free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

To support the ride, EyeCare America has launched a new microsite http://www.eyecareamerica.org/eyeride.cfm. Visitors to the site can make a donation to support EyeCare America’s various eye care programs for seniors, glaucoma, diabetes, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and children. Individuals who donate $ 25 or more will receive a FREE EyeRide for Sight wristband as a gift for their contribution. For more information, visit http://www.eyecareamerica.org.

Sponsors and partners for the EyeRide for Sight include: Pfizer Ophthalmics, Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, Illinois Association of Ophthalmology, Kansas Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Maryland Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons, Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Nevada Ophthalmological Society, Utah Ophthalmology Society, Virginia Society of Ophthalmology and Clif Bar.

Nature Publishing Group & International Society of Nephrology Announce New Journal

March 01, 2011 By: Admin Category: Health Problems

Nature Publishing Group & International Society of Nephrology Announce New Journal

(PRWEB) January 22, 2005

The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) will partner with Nature Publishing Group (NPG) to launch Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology in November 2005.

This partnership brings together the ISN’s global network of over 20,000 nephrologists with NPG’s successful publishing program, including its newest series of journals for practicing clinicians — Nature Clinical Practice.

Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology

Former ISN President, Robert W. Schrier, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, Colorado, USA, is the Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Schrier joins seven other Nature Clinical Practice Editors-in-Chief who are world renowned experts and opinion leaders in their fields.

Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology will provide the practicing physician with a comprehensive overview of the most up-to-date literature relevant to the diagnosis and management of patients with kidney disease. It will include editorial and opinion pieces, highlights from current literature, commentaries on the application of recent research to practical patient care, comprehensive reviews, and in-depth case studies. All areas concerned with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the kidney in the adult and child, including hypertension, infection/inflammation, dialysis/chronic uremia, renal failure, transplantation, applied physiology, epidemiology, pathology, immunology, cancer, and genetics will be covered.

This is the latest launch in NPG’s series of peer-reviewed journals for practicing physicians. Four journals in the Nature Clinical Practice series were launched last year; Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology and three other titles are planned for 2005. The series will eventually span some 14 titles. With the enormous amount of original research published in nephrology, as well as other medical specialties, it has become increasingly difficult for busy physicians to keep current and still find time to treat patients.

As an official publication of the International Society of Nephrology, Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology will provide ISN members with authoritative and timely interpretations of key developments in medical research, translating the latest findings into clinical practice.

About NPG

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is a division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd, dedicated to serving the academic and professional scientific community. NPG’s flagship title, Nature, is the world’s most highly-cited weekly multidisciplinary journal and was first published in 1869. Other publications include Nature research journals, Nature Reviews, Nature Clinical Practice, and a range of prestigious academic journals, including society-owned publications.

NPG is a global company, with headquarters in London and offices in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Boston, Tokyo, Paris, Munich and Basingstoke. More information about NPG can be found at http://www.nature.com.

About ISN

Founded in 1960, the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) is a not-for-profit association committed to the worldwide advancement of education, science and patient care in nephrology. This goal is achieved by means of the Society’s journals, the organization of international congresses and symposia, and various outreach programs around the world. The ISN acts as an international forum on nephrology for leading nephrologists as well as young investigators, from both developed and emerging countries. Further information is available at http://www.isn-online.org.

About the partnership

This launch is the beginning of a ten-year partnership in which NPG and ISN will collaborate on several other publishing initiatives all designed to meet the information needs of nephrologists worldwide. Another announcement will be made shortly with regard to the Society’s flagship journal Kidney International.
